Buckminster Fuller was born in Milton, Massachusetts. He was an American neo-futuristic architect, systems theorist, author, designer, and inventor. Fuller published more than 30 books, coining or popularizing terms such as "Spaceship Earth", ephemeralization, and synergetic. He also developed numerous inventions, mainly architectural designs, and popularized the widely known geodesic dome. He was the second president of Mensa from 1974 to 1983. Fuller was awarded 28 United States patents and many honorary doctorates. He was elected a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 1968. In 1970 he received the Gold Medal award from the American Institute of Architects.
