Jonathan William Patrick Aitken was born in Dublin, Ireland. He is an Irish politician. He is a former Conservative Member of Parliament for Thanet East from 1974-1983, and for South Thanet from 1983-1997. He served as Minister for Defence Procurement from 1992-1994. He was also a member of the Privy Council of the United Kingdom. He was convicted of perjury in 1999 and received an 18-months prison sentence, of which he served seven months. He attended Eton College and read law at Christ Church, Oxford. He served as a war correspondent during the 1960s in Vietnam and Biafra. He was also a journalist at Yorkshire Television from 1968 to 1970, presenting the regional news show Calendar. He has written several books include: The young meteors, Nixon, a life (biography), Pride And Perjury (autobiography), Porridge And Passion, Charles W. Colson (biography), Prayers for people under pressure, Nazarbayev and the Making of Kazakhstan (biography), and Margaret Thatcher: Power and Personality (biography).
