John Bardeen was born in Madison, Wisconsin, USA. He was an American physicist, inventor and electrical engineer. He is the only person to have won the Nobel Prize in Physics twice: first in 1956 with William Shockley and Walter Brattain for the invention of the transistor; and again in 1972 with Leon N Cooper and John Robert Schrieffer for a fundamental theory of conventional superconductivity known as the BCS theory. He earned a BS degree in Electrical Engineering in 1928, and an MS degree in Electrical Engineering in 1929 both from the University of Wisconsin at Madison. He received his PhD in Mathematical Physics from Princeton University in 1936. He served as a professor of Electrical Engineering and Physics at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign from 1951-1975. He received other awards, including National Medal of Science, IEEE Medal of Honor, and Franklin Medal.
