Charles Austin Beard was born in Knightstown, Indiana. He was an influential American historian. He stressed the importance of economic factors in American constitutional history. He published hundreds of monographs, textbooks and interpretive studies in both history and political science. Beard's most influential book, An Economic Interpretation of the U.S. Constitution, has been the subject of great controversy ever since its publication. He was also the co-author, with his wife Mary Beard, of The Rise of American Civilization, which had a major influence on American historians.
