John Caldwell Calhoun was born in Abbeville, South Carolina, USA. He was an American politician. He served as the 7th Vice President of the United States from 1825-1832. He began his political career as a nationalist, modernizer, and proponent of a strong national government and protective tariffs. He served as the United States Senator from South Carolina from 1845-1850. He also served as the United States Secretary of State, Secretary of War, and House of Representatives from South Carolina's 6th district from 1811-1817. He earned a BA degree from Yale University in 1804. He studied law from Tapping Reeve Law School in Litchfield, Connecticut. He was admitted to the South Carolina bar in 1807. He is remembered for strongly defending slavery and for advancing the concept of minority rights in politics, which he did in the context of defending white Southern interests from perceived Northern threats.
