William Hodding Carter, II was born in Hammond, Louisiana, USA. He was an American journalist and author. He studied at Columbia University. He worked as reporter for the New Orleans Item-Tribune, United Press in New Orleans, and the Associated Press in Jackson, Mississippi. He founded the Hammond Daily Courier in 1932. He won the Pulitzer Prize in 1946 for his editorials, in particular a series lambasting the ill treatment of Japanese American soldiers returning from World War II. He wrote several books include: Lower Mississippi, The Winds of Fear, Gulf Coast country, The Angry Scar, The Commandos of World War II, Their words were bullets, and Doomed Road of Empire.
