James Dewey Watson was born in Chicago, Illinois, USA. He is an American molecular biologist, geneticist and zoologist, best known as one of the co-discoverers of the structure of DNA in 1953 with Francis Crick and Rosalind Franklin. Watson, Crick, and Maurice Wilkins were awarded the 1962 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine "for their discoveries concerning the molecular structure of nucleic acids and its significance for information transfer in living material". He earned a B.Sc. degree in Zoology from the University of Chicago in 1947. He received his Ph.D. in Zoology from Indiana University in 1950. He served as a professor of Biology at Harvard University from 1956-68. From 1968-2007 he served as director of Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, greatly expanding its level of funding and research. He has written many science books, including his bestselling book The Double Helix, Molecular Biology of the Gene, and DNA: The Secret of Life(with Andrew Berry). He received many awards, including Albert Lasker Award(1960), Copley Medal(1993), and Presidential Medal of Freedom(1977).
