John Ray was born in Black Notley, Essex, England. He was an English naturalist and botanist who contributed significantly to progress in taxonomy. His enduring legacy to botany was the establishment of species as the ultimate unit of taxonomy. He published important works on botany, zoology, and natural theology. His classification of plants in his Historia Plantarum, was an important step towards modern taxonomy. He studied at St Catharine's College, Cambridge, and Trinity College, Cambridge.
