James Earle "Jimmy" Breslin was born in Jamaica, Queens, New York City, USA. He was an American columnist, journalist, novelist and screenwriter. Until the time of his death, he wrote a column for the New York Daily News Sunday edition. He served as a regular columnist for the Long Island newspaper Newsday. He was known for his newspaper columns which offered a sympathetic viewpoint of the working class people of New York City, and was awarded the 1986 Pulitzer Prize for Commentary "for columns which consistently champion ordinary citizens". He studied at Long Island University from 1948 to 1950. His career as an investigative journalist led him to cultivate ties with various Mafia and criminal elements in the city, not always with positive results. He wrote several novels include: The Gang That Couldn't Shoot Straight, World Without End, Amen, and Table Money. He wrote several films include: The Gang That Couldn't Shoot Straight and The Neighborhood.
