John Angus McPhee was born in Princeton, New Jersey, USA. He is an American author, widely considered one of the pioneers of creative nonfiction. He is a four-time finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in the category General Nonfiction and he won that award on the fourth occasion in 1999 for Annals of the Former World. He earned a BA degree from Princeton University in 1953. Since 1974, he has been the Ferris Professor of Journalism at Princeton University. His writing career began at Time magazine and led to a long association with The New Yorker, the weekly magazine, beginning in 1963 and continuing to the present. He has written other books include: A Sense of Where You Are (biography), The Headmaster (biography), Oranges, The Pine Barrens, Levels of the Game, Encounters with the Archdruid (Nominated- National Book Award), The Curve of Binding Energy (Finalist- National Book Award), Coming into the Country, and The Control of Nature.
