Howard Mumford Jones was born in Saginaw, Michigan, USA. He was an American historian, literary critic, editor, author and professor of English at Harvard University. He was the book editor for The Boston Evening Transcript. In 1965, he won the Pulitzer Prize for General Non-Fiction for O Strange New World: American Culture-The Formative Years. He wrote other books include: America And French Culture 1750-1848, Ideas in America, Primer of intellectual freedom, Education and world tragedy, Belief and Disbelief in American Literature, History and Relevance, The Age of Energy, Revolution & romanticism, and Blue and Gray Diplomacy.
