Jonas Edward Salk was born in New York City, New York, USA. He was an American physician, biomedical scientist, inventor and virologist. He discovered and developed one of the first successful polio vaccines. He earned a BS degree in chemistry from City College of New York in 1934. He earned his MD degree from New York University School of Medicine in 1939. After earning his medical degree, he began an internship as a physician scientist at Mount Sinai Hospital. He was granted a fellowship at the University of Michigan. He served as a Professor of Bacteriology and Director of Virus Reseacrh Laboratory at the University of Pittsburgh from 1947-1963. In 1960, he founded the Salk Institute for Biological Studies in La Jolla, California, which is today a center for medical and scientific research. He wrote several books include: Man unfolding, The survival of the wisest, How Like an Angel, World Population and Human Values, and Anatomy of Reality. He received many medals include: Congressional Gold Medal, Lasker Award 1956, Humanist of the Year 1976, and Presidential Medal of Freedom 1977.
