He was educated at the Royal School Cavan and Trinity College Dublin and afterwards went to London to study law. He began his career as a poet. He wrote several novels include: The Fool of Quality and Juliet Grenville. He wrote several plays include: The Earl of Essex and Gustavus Vasa.
