Freeman Alphonsa Hrabowski III was born in Birmingham, Alabama, USA. He is an American educator and mathematician. In May 1992 he began his term as president of the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, one of the twelve public universities comprising the Maryland university system. His research and many publications focus on science and math education, with a special emphasis on minority participation and performance. He graduated from Hampton Institute with high honors in mathematics. He received his M.A. in mathematics from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and four years later his Ph.D. in higher education administration and statistics. He holds over 20 honorary degrees.
