Edith Mary Pargeter was born in Horsehay, Shropshire, England. She, also known by her pen name Ellis Peters, was an English author of works in many categories, especially history and historical fiction. Beginning in the mid-1930s she wrote historical fiction and crime novels, using her own name and several pseudonyms. She is well known for her medieval-detective series The Cadfael Chronicles. The Mystery Writers of America gave Pargeter their Edgar Award in 1963 for Death and the Joyful Woman. She Goes to War is based on her experiences in military service. Under her own name she published the mystery Fallen into the Pit, featuring 13-year-old Dominic Felse. She was also honoured for her translations of Czech classics. In 1980, the British Crime Writers Association awarded her the Silver Dagger for Monk's Hood.
