Emma Donoghue was born in Dublin, Ireland. She is an Irish-Canadian playwright, literary historian, and novelist. Her first novel was 1994's Stir Fry. Her 1995 novel Hood won the Stonewall Book Award, and novel Slammerkin won the Ferro-Grumley Award for Lesbian Fiction. Her 2010 novel Room was a finalist for the Man Booker Prize. She has a first-class honours B.A. degree in English and French from University College Dublin and a Ph.D. in English from the Girton College, Cambridge.
