Jack Gilbert was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA. He was an American poet. He graduated from the University of Pittsburgh in 1954. He received his master's degree from San Francisco State University in 1963. His first book of poetry, Views of Jeopardy, won the Yale Younger Poets Prize and was nominated for the Pulitzer Prize. He wrote other poems include: Monolithos, The Great Fires, and Tough Heaven: Poems of Pittsburgh.
