He is best known for his feature films Superstar: The Karen Carpenter Story, Poison, Velvet Goldmine, Safe, and the Academy Award-nominated Far from Heaven and I'm Not There. Haynes is openly gay. He currently lives in Portland, Oregon.In 2003, Haynes was honored with the Filmmaker on the Edge Award at the Province town International Film Festival.
