Jacques Lucien Monod was born in Paris, France. He was a French biochemist, won the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1965, sharing it with François Jacob and Andre Lwoff "for their discoveries concerning genetic control of enzyme and virus synthesis". He became famous for his work on the E. coli lac operon, which encodes proteins necessary for the transport and breakdown of the sugar lactose. He earned a BS degree in Natural Sciences from the University of Paris in 1931. He earned his PhD in Natural Sciences from the University of Paris in 1941. He served as a professor (Chemistry of Metabolism) at Sorbonne from 1959-67. He served as a professor of Biochemistry at Collège de France from 1967-76. He wrote several books include: Chance and Necessity and Selected papers in molecular biology.
