Henry Edward Manning was born in Totteridge, England. He was an English Roman Catholic Archbishop of Westminster and a cardinal. He matriculated at Balliol College, Oxford in 1827. He graduated with first-class honours in 1830. He was received into the Roman Catholic Church on April 6, 1851, and was ordained a priest by Nicholas Cardinal Wiseman on June 15, 1851. He then studied theology at Rome. His rapid rise in the church culminated in his appointment as archbishop of Westminster in 1865 and his elevation to the rank of cardinal in 1875.
