Diamela Eltit is a Chilean novelist and professor. She currently holds a teaching appointment at New York University, where she teaches creative writing. She received a bachelor's degree in literature and works in the Universidad Tecnológica Metropolitana. Lumpérica, Eltit’s first novel, represents a bizarre spectacle in which a protagonist mutilates her own body. To date Diamela Eltit has published six novels: Lumpérica, Por la patria, El cuarto mundo, Vaca sagrada, Los vigilantes, and Los trabajadores de la muerte. Los vigilantes was awarded the Chilean prize Premio José Nuez for best novel in 1995.
