Emily Wilding Davison was born in Blackheath, Kent, England. She was a militant suffragette who fought for women's suffrage in Britain. She was jailed on nine occasions and force-fed 49 times. After leaving school, she found work as a teacher. She joined the Women's Social and Political Union in 1906, then quit her teaching job to work full-time for equal voting rights. In 1913, she stepped in front of a horse during the Epsom Derby and died of her injuries.
