Ernest Leroy Boyer was born in Dayton, Ohio, USA. He was an American educator who most notably served as Chancellor of the State University of New York, United States Commissioner of Education, and President of the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching. He was recipient of numerous awards, including over 140 honorary doctorates. He graduated from Greenville College. He earned his master's and doctoral degrees from University of Southern California. He wrote several books include: Scholarship Reconsidered, College: The Undergraduate Experience in America, The basic school, Ready to Learn: A Mandate for the Nation, Smart parents guide to college, and Ernest L. Boyer, selected speeches, 1979-1995.
