Geoffrey Anketell Studdert Kennedy was born in Leeds, England. He was an English Anglican priest and poet. He was nicknamed 'Woodbine Willie' during World War I for giving Woodbine cigarettes along with spiritual aid to injured and dying soldiers. He educated at Leeds Grammar School and Trinity College, Dublin, where he gained a degree in classics and divinity in 1904. A priest of the Church of England, he served as an army chaplain in World War I. In 1917, he received the Military Cross after running into no man’s land at Messines Ridge to comfort the injured. He wrote a number of poems about his experiences, and these appeared in the books Rough Rhymes of a Padre, and More Rough Rhymes. He wrote several books include: The Hardest Part, Food for the Fed-up, The New Man in Christ, and The Unutterable Beauty.
