James Earl Ray was born in Alton, Illinois, USA. He was an American criminal. He was a convicted murderer who assassinated Martin Luther King Jr. on April 4, 1968 in Memphis, Tennessee. He was convicted on his 41st birthday after entering a guilty plea to forgo a jury trial. Had he been found guilty by jury trial, he would have been eligible for the death penalty. In 1998, he died in prison of complications due to chronic hepatitis C infection. He had served 29 years in prison at the time of his death.
