John Crowe Ransom was born in Pulaski, Tennessee, USA. He was an American literary critic, poet, essayist, professor and editor. He is considered to be a founder of the New Criticism school of literary criticism. As a faculty member at Kenyon College, he was the first editor of the widely regarded Kenyon Review. He studied at Vanderbilt University in Nashville. He was appointed to the English department at Vanderbilt University in 1914. He wrote several poems include: Chills and Fever, Two Gentlemen in Bonds, Poems and Essays, and Selected Poems (National Book Award for Poetry in 1964). He wrote other books include: God Without Thunder, The World's Body, The New Criticism, and Beating the Bushes. He received many awards and honours include: Rhodes Scholarship, Guggenheim Fellowship, Bollingen Prize in Poetry, and Emerson Thoreau Medal.
