Francois Rabelais was born in Chinon, France. He was a major French Renaissance writer, physician, and Renaissance humanist. He has historically been regarded as a writer of fantasy, satire, the grotesque, bawdy jokes and songs. His best known work is Gargantua and Pantagruel. He studied medicine at the University of Poitiers and at the University of Montpellier.
