Brian O'Nolan was born in Strabane, County Tyrone, Ireland. He was an Irish novelist, satirist, and civil servant. He is regarded as a key figure in postmodern literature. His English language novels, such as At Swim-Two-Birds, The Third Policeman, The Dalkey Archive, and The Hard Life, were written under the pen name Flann O'Brien. His many satirical columns in The Irish Times and an Irish language novel An Béal Bocht were written under the name Myles na gCopaleen. As a novelist, O'Nolan was powerfully influenced by James Joyce. He earned an MA degree from University College, Dublin in 1935. He joined the Irish civil service in 1935, working in the Department of Local Government.
