George Catlett Marshall was born in Uniontown, Pennsylvania, USA. He was an American statesman and soldier. He was Chief of Staff of the United States Army under two presidents, and served as Secretary of State, and then Secretary of Defense, under President Harry S. Truman. He served as the chief military adviser to President Franklin D. Roosevelt. He was most famous for his leadership in the Allied victory in World War II and for his work establishing the post-war reconstruction effort for Europe, which became known as the Marshall Plan. He received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1953 for the plan, which was aimed at the economic recovery of Western Europe after World War II. In 1901, he graduated from the Virginia Military Institute.
