George Simon Kaufman was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA. He was an American playwright, theatre director and producer, humorist, and drama critic. One play and one musical that he wrote won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama: You Can't Take It with You(with Moss Hart) and Of Thee I Sing(with Morrie Ryskind and Ira Gershwin). He also won the Tony Award as a Director, for the musical Guys and Dolls. He began his career as a journalist and drama critic; he was the drama critic for The New York Times from 1917 through 1930. He wrote several plays include: The Butter and Egg Man, Once in a Lifetime(with Moss Hart), Merrily We Roll Along(with Moss Hart), The Royal Family(with Edna Ferber), Stage Door(with Edna Ferber), Dinner at Eight(with Edna Ferber), June Moon(with Ring Lardner), Dulcy(with Marc Connelly), Merton of the Movies(with Marc Connelly), and Beggar on Horseback(with Marc Connelly).
