Grace Brewster Murray Hopper was born in New York City, New York, USA. She was an American computer scientist, programmer, mathematician, and United States Navy rear admiral. Owing to her accomplishments and her naval rank, she is sometimes referred to as "Amazing Grace". A pioneer in the field, she was one of the first programmers of the Harvard Mark I computer, and developed the first compiler for a computer programming language. She popularized the idea of machine-independent programming languages, which led to the development of COBOL, one of the first modern programming languages. She graduated Phi Beta Kappa with a bachelor's degree in mathematics and physics from Vassar college in 1928 and earned her master's degree in Mathematics and Physics from Yale University in 1930. She earned a Ph.D. in mathematics from Yale University in 1934. She taught mathematics at Vassar college in 1931, and was promoted to associate professor in 1941.
