John Gay was born in Barnstaple, Devon, England. He was an English poet and dramatist, chiefly remembered as the author of The Beggar’s Opera, a work distinguished by good-humoured satire and technical assurance. He was educated at the town's grammar school. He wrote several poems, including Trivia, and Poetry and prose of John Gay. He wrote several plays, including The Beggar's Opera, Polly, Achilles, and Three Hours After Marriage.
