Hilda Lucia Solis was born in Los Angeles, California, USA. She is an American politician. She serves a member of the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors for the 1st district since 2014. She served as the 25th United States Secretary of Labor from 2009 to 2013, as part of the Obama administration. She is a member of the Democratic Party and served in the United States House of Representatives from 2001 to 2009, representing the 31st and 32nd congressional districts of California that include East Los Angeles and the San Gabriel Valley. She was elected to the California State Assembly in 1992, and the California State Senate in 1994. She was the first female recipient of the John F. Kennedy Profile in Courage Award in 2000. She earned a B.A. degree in political science from California State Polytechnic University Pomona in 1979. She earned a Master of Public Administration degree from the University of Southern California in 1981.
