Sir John Denham was born in Dublin, Ireland. He was a British poet, courtier and politician. He served as Surveyor of the King's Works. He was educated at Trinity College, Oxford. He was a Member of Parliament for Old Sarum in 1661, a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1663, and became a Knight of the Bath. He began his literary career with a tragedy, The Sophy, but his poem, Cooper's Hill, is the work by which he is remembered.
