Jean-Claude Carrière was born in Colombières-sur-Orb, Hérault, France. He is a French screenwriter, playwright, novelist, actor and film director. He was an alumnus of the École normale supérieure de Saint-Cloud and was president of La Fémis, the French state film school. He has written several films include: Happy Anniversary (Short Film), Diary of a Chambermaid, Belle de Jour, The Milky Way, The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie, The Phantom of Liberty, That Obscure Object of Desire, The Tin Drum, Danton, The Return of Martin Guerre, The Last Image, The Unbearable Lightness of Being, Valmont, Cyrano de Bergerac, Birth, Goya's Ghosts, and The Mahabharata. He has written several plays include: The Mahabharata (with Peter Brook), L'Aide-mémoire, La Terrasse, and The Conference of the Birds (with Peter Brook). His role in several films include: Diary of a Chambermaid and The Milky Way. He is the author of novel, entitled Lézard. He received many awards, including Academy Award for Best Live Action Short Film for Heureux Anniversaire shared with Pierre Étaix (1963), Laurel Award for Screenwriting Achievement (2000), Academy Honorary Award for lifetime achievement (2014), and Padma Shri, the fourth highest civilian award of India (2015).
