John Cleveland was born in Loughborough, Leicestershire, England. He was an English poet who supported the Royalist cause in the English Civil War. He earned a BA degree from Christ's College, Cambridge in 1632. He became a fellow of St John's College in 1634, where he became a college tutor and lecturer on rhetoric. He wrote several poems include: Poems, 1653, The Poems of John Cleveland, and The Character of a London Diurnal.
