George Chapman was born in Hitchin, Hertfordshire, England. He was an English playwright, translator, and poet. He was a classical scholar whose work shows the influence of Stoicism. He is best remembered for his translations of Homer's Iliad and Odyssey, and the Homeric Batrachomyomachia. His earliest published works were the obscure philosophical poems The Shadow of Night and Ovid's Banquet of Sense. Other poems by Chapman include: De Guiana and Carmen Epicum. He wrote several plays include: Bussy D'Ambois, An Humorous Day's Mirth, The Widow's Tears, All Fools, The Gentleman Usher, The Blind Beggar of Alexandria, Monsieur D'Olive, and May Day.
