Isabella Lucy Bird was born in Boroughbridge, Yorkshire, England. She was an English explorer, writer, photographer and naturalist. With Fanny Jane Butler she founded the John Bishop Memorial hospital in Srinagar, India. She was the first woman to be elected Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society. She was elected to membership of the Royal Photographic Society on 12 January 1897. She wrote several books include: The Englishwoman in America, The aspects of religion in the United States of America, Notes on old Edinburgh, A lady's life in the Rocky Mountains, Unbeaten Tracks in Japan, The Golden Chersonese, Journeys in Persia and Kurdistan, Among the Tibetans, and Korea and Her Neighbours.
