Edward Louis James Bernays was born in Vienna, Austria. He was an Austrian-born American pioneer in the field of public relations and propaganda, referred to in his obituary as "the father of public relations". Adam Curtis's award-winning 2002 documentary for the BBC, The Century of the Self, pinpoints Bernays as the originator of modern public relations, and Bernays was named one of the 100 most influential Americans of the 20th century by Life magazine. In 1912 he graduated from Cornell University with a degree in agriculture, but chose journalism as his first career. A vigorous spokesman and advocate for public relations into his 90s, Bernays was the author of many books, among the most influential of which were Crystallizing Public Opinion, Propaganda, and Public Relations.
