John Sandford, real name John Roswell Camp was born in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, USA. He is an American novelist and journalist. He earned a Bachelor's degree in American History and a Master's degree in Journalism from the University of Iowa. From 1971 to 1978, he wrote for The Miami Herald. In 1978, he started writing for The Saint Paul Pioneer Press as a features reporter; in 1980 he became a daily columnist. In 1985, during the Midwest farm crisis, he wrote a series entitled "Life on the Land: an American farm family", which followed a typical southwest Minnesota farm family through the course of a full year. For that work, he won the annual Pulitzer Prize for Feature Writing. He also won the American Society of News Editors award for Non-Deadline Feature Writing. He has written several novels (Kidd series) include: The Fool's Run, The Empress File, The Devil's Code, and The Hanged Man's Song. (Virgil Flowers series novels): Dark of the Moon, Heat Lightning, Rough Country, Shock Wave, Mad River, Storm Front, Deadline, Escape Clause, and Deep Freeze. (Singular Menace series novels, with Michelle Cook): Uncaged, Outrage, and Rampage. (Prey series novels): Rules of Prey, Shadow Prey, Eyes of Prey, Silent Prey, and Winter Prey. He has written other novels, including The Night Crew, Dead Watch, and Saturn Run (with Ctein).
