James Robert Runcie was born in Cambridge, England. He is a British novelist, documentary film-maker, TV producer and screenwriter. He is Commissioning Editor for Arts on BBC Radio 4, a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature and visiting professor at Bath Spa University. He was educated at Marlborough College and Trinity Hall, Cambridge. He gained a first-class degree in English from Cambridge University in 1981. He subsequently trained at Bristol Old Vic Theatre School. He has written several novels include: Canvey Island, The Discovery of Chocolate, The Colour of Heaven, and East Fortune. He directed several documentary films include: J.K. Rowling: A Year in the Life(also producer) and Hildegard of Bingen(also screenwriter).
