Catherine de Hueck Doherty was born in Nizhny Novgorod, Russia. She was born in Russia and emigrated to Canada in 1921. She was a Canadian Catholic social activist, author, and foundress of the Madonna House Apostolate. She established Friendship House in Harlem, New York, as well as Madonna House, a Catholic community of men, women, and priests in Combermere, Ontario. Doherty’s cause for canonization as a saint was opened by Pope John Paul II in 2000, and she has been given the official title Servant of God.
