Garth Stein was born in Los Angeles, California, USA. He is an American novelist and producer. Widely known as the author of the New York Times bestselling novel, The Art of Racing in the Rain, Stein is also a documentary film maker, playwright, teacher, and amateur racer. He earned a B.A. from Columbia College of Columbia University in 1987 and a Master of Fine Arts degree in film from the University's School of the Arts in 1990. In 1991, he co-produced an Academy Award winning short film, The Lunch Date. He also produced and directed a documentary about his sister's brain surgery, entitled When Your Head's Not a Head, It's a Nut. He has written two plays include: Brother Jones and No One Calls Me Mutt Anymore. He has written several novels include: Raven Stole the Moon, How Evan Broke His Head and Other Secrets, The Art of Racing in the Rain, and A Sudden Light. He writes children's novel Racing in the Rain: My Life as a Dog.
