Yann Martel was born in Salamanca, Spain. He is a Canadian author best known for the Man Booker Prize-winning novel Life of Pi, a international bestseller published in more than 50 territories. He is also the author of the novels Beatrice and Virgil and Self. He has won a number of literary prizes, including the 2001 Hugh MacLennan Prize for Fiction. His first published fictional work, Seven Stories, appeared in 1993.
