Horace Walpole was born in London, England. He was an English art historian and Whig politician. He was the son of the first British Prime Minister Sir Robert Walpole. He educated at Eton College and King's College, Cambridge. His literary reputation rests on his Gothic novel, The Castle of Otranto and his Letters, which are of significant social and political interest. He was elected Whig Member of Parliament for Callington from 1741-1754, a Member of Parliament for Castle Rising from 1754-1757, and a Member of Parliament for King's Lynn from 1757-1768. He wrote several books include: Anecdotes of Painting in England, Historic Doubts on the Life And Reign of King Richard III, The Mysterious Mother, On Modern Gardening, and Hieroglyphic Tales.
