David Royston Bailey was born in Leytonstone, London, England. He is an English photographer and writer. Bailey developed a love of natural history, and this led him into photography. In 1959, Bailey became a photographic assistant at the John French studio, and in May 1960, he was a photographer for John Cole's Studio Five, before being contracted as a fashion photographer for British Vogue magazine later that year. Since 1966, he has also directed several television commercials and documentaries. He was awarded The Royal Photographic Society's Centenary Medal and Honorary Fellowship in recognition of a sustained, significant contribution to the art of photography in 2005.
