He is a contributing writer to The New York Times Book Review, a contributing editor to Time magazine, and a former Editor-in-Chief of Newsweek. He won the 2009 Pulitzer Prize for Biography or Autobiography for American Lion: Andrew Jackson in the White House. He studied at Sewanee: The University of the South. He has written several books include: Franklin and Winston, American Gospel, Beyond Bin Laden, Thomas Jefferson: The Art of Power, Thomas Jefferson: President and Philosopher, Destiny and Power, and The Soul of America.
