George Stanley McGovern was born in Avon, South Dakota, USA. He was an American historian and politician, and the Democratic Party presidential nominee in the 1972 presidential election. He was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1956 and re-elected in 1958. He served as U.S. Senator from South Dakota from 1963 to 1981. He served as U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Agencies for Food and Agriculture from 1998 to 2001 and was appointed the first UN Global Ambassador on World Hunger by the World Food Programme in 2001. He earned a BA degree from Dakota Wesleyan University in 1946. He earned an MA degree from Northwestern University in 1949. He earned a Ph.D. in history from Northwestern University in 1953. He served as a history and political Science professor at Dakota Wesleyan University from 1950-53. He served as a History professor at University of New Orleans from 1981-82. He wrote several books include: War Against Want, Agricultural Thought in the Twentieth Century, Grassroots(memoir), What It Means to Be a Democrat, Ending hunger now, The essential America, The Third Freedom, Social security and the golden age, and Food and Population.
