Angelo Bartlett Giamatti was born in Boston and grew up in South Hadley, Massachusetts. He was the president of Yale University and later the seventh Commissioner of Major League Baseball. Despite having the shortest term of any commissioner, Giamatti made perhaps the most famous decision ever by a commissioner in negotiating the agreement terminating the Pete Rose betting scandal by permitting Rose to voluntarily withdraw from the sport to avoid further punishment.
