Fiona Apple was born in New York City, New York, USA. She is an American singer-songwriter, pianist, and record producer. Her debut album, Tidal, written when Apple was seventeen, was released in 1996 and received a Grammy Award for Best Female Rock Vocal Performance for the single "Criminal". Other singles from Tidal included "Shadowboxer", "Sleep to Dream", and "Never Is a Promise". She accepted MTV Video Music Award for "Best New Artist" for her song Sleep to Dream in 1997.
